The IGU Urban Commission in collaboration with the Department of Geography – Geoscience Institute of the University Federal of Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), is pleased to invite you to its annual meeting.

In 2017, the special focus for this conference will be on Digital cities and spatial justice. Although offering the potential to enhance sustainability, equity and inclusion within urban areas, many scholars argue that the digitalization of urban societies mirrors and has further entrenched pre-existing social and spatial inequalities. This (re-)production of spatial injustices within the city polarizes communities and presents many challenges for residents, policymakers and civil society groups. Papers addressing these issues are particularly welcome for the 2017 Annual Urban Commission Meeting.

In addition to the theme on Digital cities and spatial justice, participants are invited to submit individual papers, and/or proposals for panel sessions or roundtables on the following thematic foci of the commission:

Success & Failure of the Arch-Digital City:

The Transformation of the San Francisco Bay Area

RICHARD WALKER is Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught from 1975 to 2012 and served at various times as Chair of Geography, Global Metropolitan Studies, and California Studies. He has written on a diverse range of topics in economic, urban, and environmental geography, published in journals from Society and Space to New Left Review.  He is co-author of two classics in economic geography, The Capitalist Imperative (1989) and The New Social Economy (1992).  He has written extensively on California, including The Conquest of Bread (2004), The Country in the City (2007) and The Atlas of California (2013). His awards include Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, the Distinguished Scholarship Award of the Association of American Geographers, the Carey McWilliams Award from California Studies Association, and the Hal Rothman prize from the Western History Association. He lives half the year in Berkeley and the other half in Burgundy. 

ABSTRACT: The San Francisco Bay Area is the world center of IT, a dynamo of the global economy, and volcanic generator of innovation and wealth. It offers a lively urban scene in a country known more for banal suburbs, and is known far and wide as a politically progressive and socially enlightened place.  In short, it offers the best case for urbanism in our time – one that is commonly underestimated in discussion of ‘global cities’.   Yet it serves as a cautionary tale for the contradictions of contemporary capitalism and neoliberalism.  It suffers from one of the world’s worst housing bubbles, yawning class inequality, a deeply racialized social-spatial order, and uncontrolled urban sprawl. All the while, it spews forth libertarian/technotopian ideas that travel well but hide a less flattering reality.

Spatial justice and Digital City: Space as an operational medium in Brazil

ANGELO SERPA holds a doctorate in Landscape and Environmental Planning from the Universitaet Für Bodenkultur Wien (1994), with postdoctoral studies in Organization of Outer Space and Urban-Regional and Landscape Planning at the University of São Paulo (1995-1996) and in Cultural and Urban Geography Held at the Université Paris IV (Sorbonne / 2002-2003) and the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (2009). He is currently an associate professor at the Federal University of Bahia. He has experience in the areas of Geography and Planning, with emphasis on Urban Geography, Regional Geography and Cultural Geography, Urban Planning, Regional Planning and Landscape Planning, working mainly on the following research topics: public space, urban and metropolitan peripheries, manifestations of culture Popular, neighborhood identity, cognition and environmental perception, socio-spatial appropriation of the media, institutional regionalization strategies. He is a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Programs in Geography and Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Bahia, where he is also editor responsible for GeoTextos Magazine.

ABSTRACT: It is intended to present a comparative picture of the insertion of information and communication technologies in the national territory, at different scales (macro-regional, provincial and intra-urban), thinking of space as an operational medium and taking the notions of spatial justice and accessibility as guiding principles of the proposed reflection. The discussion is also based on the assumption that places are “platforms” for the construction of actions and speeches of eminently space matrix that goes through varied scales and cuttings.

How to use social networks in Geography? The workshop aims to give to young scholars the main concepts and tools in order to be able to learn by themselves to deal with social networks in Geography.

– W2: Full day: Sustainable cities and spatial justice (OURSUS: Ton Dietz, Qiu Li)

How can (young) urban geographers and geography teachers use the integrative approach to Global sustainable cities initiatives in their research designs and in their geography classes. How can it be linked to the debate about spatial justice. How does access to digitally available information from all over the world help geography researchers, students, teachers and pupils to design truly comparative approaches, as well as using inspiring examples of best practices?
